SSAB's Fossil-Free Energy Thin-Slab Continuous Casting and Rolling Production Line Begins construction

The Swedish Steel Company (SSAB) has officially started construction of its fossil-free energy thin slab continuous casting and rolling production line at its Luleå plant. It is planned to be fully operational by 2029. It may become one of the most electrified steel mills.
The design capacity of this thin slab continuous casting and rolling production line is 2.5 million tons per year. It will adopt the QSP-DUE® (a multi-functional headless rolling technology developed by Daniele) thin slab continuous casting and rolling technology. The product design specifications range from 1.3 millimeters to 25.4 millimeters × 2100 millimeters, and the maximum single roll weight is 40 tons. The production line will be equipped with two electric arc furnaces and refining equipment. The raw materials include scrap steel and direct reduced iron. SSAB will also configure a QSP-DUE® hot rolling production line, a cold continuous rolling production line, including acid rolling lines, hot galvanizing lines and continuous annealing lines in the steel rolling area. The continuous casting and rolling production line here will also adopt Daniele's automation solutions, robots and auxiliary systems. SSAB stated that the entire thin slab continuous casting and rolling and cold rolling production line project has an investment of 4.5 billion euros (approximately 5287 million US dollars).
It is reported that after the completion of this production line, the factory where it is located will become one of the steel production plants with the highest level of electrification and the strongest sustainability in the world, contributing a reduction of 7% to Sweden's total carbon emissions.
