JFE Chiba region factory's new electric arc furnace has been put into operation.
On April 29th, JFE Steel Corporation announced that its new electric arc furnace located at the East Japan Steelworks in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, has officially come into operation.
This electric arc furnace is part of the 4th steelmaking workshop of the aforementioned steelworks and is used for producing stainless steel. This electric arc furnace will combine the steelmaking process using scrap steel with its existing blast furnace process, replacing part of the iron water with scrap steel.
This electric arc furnace significantly enhances the capacity for smelting with scrap steel, and the estimated scrap steel usage is approximately 300,000 tons per year. This is expected to help JFE Steel Corporation reduce approximately 450,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.
The project investment is estimated to be approximately 15 billion yen (approximately 95 million US dollars). This project is part of JFE Steel Corporation's plan to achieve its own carbon neutrality transformation strategy by 2030, focusing on increasing the utilization rate of scrap steel and adopting low-carbon emission steelmaking processes.
