Trump announced that tariffs on imported steel, aluminium, etc. would be raised to 50%
On June 3 local time, US President Trump signed an order to raise the tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%. This tariff policy will take effect from June 4, 2025, Eastern Time of the United States.
According to a statement issued by the White House of the United States, the tariff on steel and aluminum imported by the United States from the United Kingdom will still remain at 25%. Starting from July 9, 2025, the US side can adjust the applicable tariff rates in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Policy Statement and formulate import quotas for steel and aluminum. If the UK is determined to have failed to comply with the relevant provisions of the Environmental Policy Statement, the applicable tariff rate can be raised to 50%.
On May 30 local time, US President Trump said at a rally held in Pennsylvania that the tariff on imported steel would be raised from 25% to 50%. Trump promptly posted on social media platforms that the decision would take effect from June 4th. On May 31, a spokesperson for the European Commission stated that the EU is prepared to take countermeasures, including responding to the recent tariffs imposed by the United States. The European Commission is currently conducting final consultations on expanding countermeasures. According to a report by Canadian official media on May 30th, the Canadian industry strongly opposes US President Trump's plan to double steel and aluminum tariffs. Bea Bruck, the president of the Canadian Labour Congress, said that the reckless actions of the US government would have an impact on the Canadian economy.
