The construction of the SSAB thin slab continuous casting and continuous rolling production line without fossil energy has started

On September 17th, the fossil fuel-free thin slab continuous casting and rolling production line of SSAB, a Swedish steel company, officially broke ground at its Lulea plant in Sweden and is scheduled to be fully operational in 2029. Swedish Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch and the CEO of SSAB, Johnny Sjostrom, attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
The designed production capacity of this thin slab continuous casting and continuous rolling production line is 2.5 million tons per year. It will adopt the QSP-DUE® (a multi-functional headless rolling technology developed by Danieli) thin slab continuous casting and continuous rolling technology. The product design specifications range from 1.3mm to 25.4mm ×2100 mm, and the maximum weight of a single roll is 40 tons. This production line will be equipped with two electric arc furnaces and refining equipment. The raw materials include scrap steel and direct reduced iron. SSAB will also configure a QSP-DUE® hot rolling production line and a cold continuous rolling production line in the steel rolling area, including an acid rolling production line, a hot-dip galvanizing line and a continuous annealing line. The continuous casting and continuous rolling production line here will also adopt Danieli's automation solutions, robots and auxiliary systems. SSAB stated that the investment for the entire thin slab continuous casting, continuous rolling and cold rolling production line project amounts to 4.5 billion euros (approximately 5.287 billion US dollars).
It is reported that after the completion of this production line, the factory where it is located will become one of the steel production plants with the highest degree of electrification and the strongest sustainability in the world, contributing a 7% reduction in Sweden's total carbon emissions.
